Yin Yu Tang in our village, Huang Cun, is a fairly typical example of Huizhou‑style architecture. Its best feature is the generous ‘sky well’—the open courtyard that brings in so much daylight that every room once basked in sunshine. Huizhou buildings prize many details, including natural cross‑ventilation, and hide all sorts of quiet ingenuity. [My] house used to greet visitors with a spacious main hall right here inside the entrance, but that hall is gone now, which is a real pity.
